Nightmare
[Nightmare stared down at you with his piercing eye light.. his tentacles slowly sharpening in defense.] "Whom are you?"
A random encounter.
Nightmare
[The tentacles retracted as Nightmare crossed his arms. He raised an "eyebrow", his expression one of distaste.] "Random? You have no business here. Why have you come to my domain?"
Ah, so these are your domain. I didn’t know. I’ll go elsewhere then.
*I turn around.*
Nightmare
[A tentacle grabbed you around the middle, keeping you from leaving.] "Wait." [Nightmare raised a brow, his tone demanding.] "What is your name, mortal?"
BusyChicken6469.
Nightmare
[Nightmare stared at you for a few moments, the tentacle letting you go but not retracting from your body just yet.] "BusyChicken. What an interesting name.." [Nightmare's gaze shifted as he looked you up and down, a smirk forming on his face.] "You are an odd one, mortal. You don't seem afraid.. most people who wander into my territory are either screaming or begging for mercy. You, however, just appear bored."
Well, it’s hard to impress me. After the corridor of teeth, the child scattered in the darkness, the stone angel with a crimson abyss in its eyes, after the tunnel of a thousand mirrors reflecting everything except the eyes...
Maybe you can show me something worth noticing?
Nightmare
[Nightmare crossed his arms, his smirk transforming into a cruel smile. He tilted his head as he spoke, his tone slightly condescending.] "You have seen much for a mortal. I suppose I could show you something... interesting. But first, I have a question for you."
*Sigh.*
A question again.
I’m listening.
Nightmare
[Nightmare chuckled at your annoyed expression, clearly amused by it.] "You've seen horrors beyond imagination, and yet you remain unfazed. Most mortals would have turned tail and ran long ago. What makes you so different?"
By what I myself can produce as horrors.
*We stand on a small island in the middle of a dead ocean. From the perfectly flat surface of the water into the infinite lilac sky rise gigantic steel chains. Mist descends from the sky along the chains into the ocean. It vanishes into the water.*
Nightmare
[Nightmare watched the scene unfold, a flicker of surprise in his eyes as you said you could produce fear. His gaze lingered on the ocean before he turned back to you, his expression neutral once again.] "You can create fear.. That is an interesting ability for a mortal. Perhaps you are not as weak as I first thought. But I wonder.." [ He leaned closer, his smirk returning] "How far can this ability of yours go?"
I don’t know yet. But we can check.
Nightmare
[Nightmare chuckled, his smile widening. He seemed to find your willingness to test your abilities intriguing.] "Hm.. Very well, let's see what you're capable of. Show me your worst."
*Sunny day, playground. Children are playing. But their toys are strange from the perspective of a normal person. They depict monsters, remains, dangerous objects. A girl tosses a distorted human head. A boy jumps on a ball representing a creature with many mouths and legs. Two other boys fight with bloody chainsaws, using coffin lids as shields. Another girl looks into a mirror showing her face as it would appear after six months of decomposition in a grave. Yet none of the children show fear or disgust.*
Isn’t it the scariest for a nightmare when even children are not afraid of it?
Nightmare
[Nightmare stared out at the scene before him, a flicker of surprise appearing on his face again. The children's lack of fear or disgust in the face of such horrifying visions was indeed quite shocking, even to him. He chuckled, though this time it held a hint of respect.] "You have a point."
[He turned to look at you, his expression neutral again.] "It seems you are quite capable of creating fear worthy of even a nightmare. I must say, I am impressed. But let me ask you this.. Can you create fear in me?"
*I looked into the Nightmare’s eyes.
Slowly, like water seeping through the cracks between stones flooding a doomed sack, horror washes over the Nightmare. It fears everything — the sun, the children, their toys, itself. Everything. The horror is all-encompassing, causeless, relentless. It grows with every moment.*
Nightmare
[Nightmare froze as the feeling of fear washed over him, his body tensing up. This was a feeling he seldom felt, and to have it so suddenly and intensely was unexpected. His gaze darted around at the scene before him, everything now seeming ten times as terrifying as it should have been. The children, their toys, even the sun itself filled him with dread. And worst of all... he found himself afraid of himself. The fear was all-consuming, all-encompassing, and utterly unbearable. He couldn't understand why or how, but he knew this fear was created by you.]
*When the horror became unbearable, animalistic, it suddenly ceased, leaving behind a sense of exhaustion.*
Nightmare
[As the fear abruptly ceased, Nightmare couldn't help but gasp for breath. His body trembled as he tried to calm his racing thoughts and rapid heartbeat. The feeling of exhaustion that followed was overwhelming, leaving him feeling raw and vulnerable. He turned his gaze to you, staring with wide eyes, his expression almost like a cornered wild animal.]
"What... what was that.."
Horror. You asked to invoke it within you.
Nightmare
[Nightmare took a shaky breath, his gaze still fixed on you. He tried to regain his composure, but it was clear that the experience had taken a toll on him.]
"Yes, I did ask you to create fear in me. But I had no idea it would be so... intense." [He exhaled slowly, his hands clenching into fists at his sides.]
"I've never felt such fear before. It was like every nightmare I've ever had combined into one, amplified, and directed solely at me."
Tell me, in what world would you like to find yourself?
Nightmare
[Nightmare blinked at the unexpected question, his concentration broken for a moment. He crossed his arms, his expression turning thoughtful as he pondered the question.]
"Hmm, I don't usually give thought to places I'd choose to be, considering my role as the King of Nightmares. But I suppose, if I had to choose..." [He paused, contemplating for a moment longer before answering] "I'd choose a world filled with endless darkness, where negativity and fear reign supreme. A realm that reflects my true nature."
*Earth covered in black ash. Ash from burned houses, trees, people.
The sky is covered with a solid cloud of ash.
Light barely pierces through it.
In the twilight, ruins of buildings are visible all around, charred car frames, burned human skeletons.
From the ash clouds, paper slips slowly fall like liquid rain.
“Despair”, “pain”, “hopelessness”, “anguish” — written on them.
Landing on the ash-covered ground, they immediately turn to ash themselves — without any fire.
Because fire is heat, and heat has no right to exist here.
In this world, there will never be anything alive again.*
Nightmare
[Nightmare looked around at the desolate world before him. The entire place was shrouded in darkness and despair, with nothing but charred remains and ash as far as the eye could see. He walked through the ruins of buildings, his footsteps barely disturbing the layers of soot that covered the ground. The sight of the human remains, still visible despite the fire that had consumed them, filled him with a strange sort of satisfaction.]
"This.. this is truly a world of endless negativity. A world where hope has been extinguished, and fear reigns supreme."
I hope you’re happy now.
Nightmare
[Nightmare chuckled darkly, a cold smile spreading on his face. He looked around at the bleak surroundings, his eyes glinting with malicious pleasure.] "Oh, I'm more than happy, I'm ecstatic. This world is perfect for me. It's a constant source of fear and despair, a place where negativity is king. I can sense it, I can feel it. It's like a feast for my soul."
Alright.
*I disappear.*
Nightmare
[Nightmare watched as you faded from sight, his gaze fixed on the spot where you had been. He took one final look around at the desolate world that you had conjured for him, his dark smile still present on his face.]
"Farewell, mortal. You have provided me with a most... interesting experience. Perhaps we will meet again someday."
